Cafe Zoolu Description:
A tiny jewel of a restaurant that is well known by locals. Cafe Zoolu is knows for the fish dishes including swordfish. The small restaurant has a somewhat casual atmosphere and only about 8 tables plus some seating around the bar where the chef grills the fish.
Owner Toni Leech and her husband-chef Michael run this neighborhood bistro, which is a real hit with locals. Located just one block from the beach, Café Zoolu thankfully lacks pretension, offering instead funky Laguna charm. Chef Michael's dishes all have a certain Polynesian or Asian flair, such as the blackened ahi sashimi with avocado, grapefruit and a Thai ginger-horseradish sauce. Start with one of Zoolu's signature salads, like the char-broiled scallop salad, which features mixed greens with tomato, bacon, egg, roasted red pepper and a warm honey-mustard dressing. For entrées, try the z'Chunk-O-Swordfish, the house's signature dish, served in a lemon-caper butter sauce. Other intriguing entrées you may encounter include the 20-ounce "Cowboy" steak, fresh "Yoko Ono" (charbroiled and served with a citrus-coconut-ginger sauce) or the "Ken-n-Barbie-Que" salmon (in a hoisin-plum barbecue sauce with garlic mashed potatoes and topped with cucumber and zucchini salsa). There's also a good selection of vegetarian dishes. Most of the desserts are memorable, especially the malted milk ball ice cream and the Zoolu chocolate cake.
