While The Capital Grille just down the street remains the favorite haunt of old-school tycoons, Chestnut Hill's Metropolitan Club caters to their heirs. This is your new-money dot-commer's chophouse, clubby yet decked out in modern bling: copper panels, frosted and back-lit glass panes, striking light fixtures. And the menu is the décor's equivalent. Sure, there's the classic iceberg wedge, but there's also a harvest salad laden with squashes, salsify and seared goat's cheese and drizzled with apple-mustard vinaigrette. All the standard hefty cuts of meat---flown in from Japan and Australia as well as Nebraska---are on offer, but so are the likes of short-rib stroganoff with porcini spätzle; peppy sides include baby sweet potatoes baked with cinnamon-sugar and edamame succotash. We reserve our loudest wow, however, for the smattering of à la carte specialty toppings---from foie gras ravioli to garlicky escargots and fried bone marrow. Finally, forget the worn-out molten chocolate cake; the Met version oozes with caramel. Speaking of oozing, the wine list spilleth over with choices for the oenophile and the show-off alike. It's just the place to impress a date in the post-millennium---provided she isn't a hardcore herbivore. For a value, visit on Monday nights, when you'll enjoy a juicy burger for just $5.
