Silvertone Bar and Grill Description:
Owner Josh Childs was considered a pioneer when he opened his casual Downtown Crossing bar-restaurant in the late nineties. But his winning formula---solid bartending, good comfort food at modest prices, and an attractively priced wine list---draws a steady stream of post-work revelers from the nearby Financial District and government buildings, pre-show concertgoers headed for the nearby Orpheum Theatre, and late-night collegians and hipsters. The space is dimly-lit, clean and minimalist (light wood, slate accents, concrete floors), the vibe convivial and usually loud. Many patrons come just for the ably-mixed cocktails and nice selection of craft brews, but Silvertone's menu of American comfort food classics should not be missed. It's noteworthy for its freshness, good simple salads, and some little touches (barely-wilted greens on the side, topnotch fries) not always found in bar settings like this. Standouts include steak tips, meatloaf with mashed potatoes, simply grilled fish, a roasted half-chicken, and a baked, crumb-topped macaroni and cheese. Savvy wine lovers like the place for its bottle pricing, not the three-times-retail markup of most Boston restaurants, but a mere $10 over retail, yielding some bargains.
