Restaurant Marliave Description:
A Downtown Crossing landmark since 1875, this restaurant operated as Cafe Marliave until it closed in 2007, and was taken over by the owner of Grotto, who reopened it under the current name.
The upstairs restaurant serves continental cuisine, with a view of the city. The downstairs serves classic cocktails and updated classic American dishes, like those served when it operated as a speakeasy during Prohibition.
Marliave, a former speakeasy that's endured wars, floods, recessions and even 23 presidents, is a Downtown Crossing landmark. The food hasn't always been as amazing as its longevity; fortunately, Grotto chef Scott Herritt has dedicated himself to making the restaurant relevant food-wise. Old-school cocktails call to mind the restaurant's history (libations like the F.D.R. and the Jennie Churchill); time-honored standards such as beef Wellington and rarebits satisfy diners looking for tamer fare. The raw bar menu is also popular with the pre-theater crowd.
