This resurection of the old Locke Ober's by its new owner/chef provides the very high end food and atmosphere that is expected from one of Boston's oldest names.
This is old-school Brahmin dining at its stateliest. Generations have basked in the glow of mahogany, crystal and silver while dining grandly on oysters and lobster stew (JFK's favorite), Dover sole and steak au poivre. A few years back, it was on its last legs, when Lydia Shire---something of a Boston institution among foodies herself---bought the place and injected her singularly bold sensibilities into the mix without losing the opulence of old. Now, rum-and-tobacco-smoked salmon, grappa-flamed foie gras atop bitter-almond croissants and ricotta-walnut ravioli with golden raisins, anchovies and fried mustard greens add contemporary pizzazz to signatures like steak au poivre, sole meunière and the famed lobster Savannah. We wish the kitchen were always up to its pomp and circumstance; when it isn't, the disappointment is exacerbated by the exorbitant price tag. When it is, however, a meal here is truly a special occasion, especially since the service remains as old-school kid-glove as could be.
