Flash's Description:
Flash's, when it opened, occupied a patch of concrete that was at best a no-man's-land. Now, as the consumer-mad Back Bay and dining-obsessed South End have begun to spill onto one another, it's got company. And that means Flash's now has a consistent crowd. They come for a retro-chic atmosphere that is all earnest angles and silver detailing. Ditto a cocktail list with roots---Flash's was pouring Old Fashioneds, Manhattans and the like before they were new again. Food here is delivered in a similar vein and---given that prices are very low for the area---that is impressive. Think Americana in the pre-dawn of its culinary awakening, showing just a touch of global awareness. A fried-chicken sandwich with two cheeses and bacon dons a dollop of chipotle aïoli; pulled-pork sammies and turkey burgers are miniaturized in accordance with the small-plates craze; even good old french fries are tossed with garlic and thyme. Accessible, affable, affordable---Flash's is no flash in the pan. (Does a warning against ostensibly Thai-style wings and flatbreads, however, go without saying?)
