Gioia Pizzeria Description:
With its tiny counter, 18-inch thin-crust pies and touch of attitude, this gourmet pizza joint on the precious Hopkins Street stretch of Northbrae serves pies and slices to throngs of Berkeley locals. Unfortunately, better-than-average pies here come at the expense of lackluster service, and quality has taken a dip in recent years, but nobody seems to mind. School kids and families take to several outdoor benches with large, foldable, New-York-style slices of formaggio or seasonal varieties such as asparagus or butternut squash with Gorgonzola. Eight rotating varieties of full-size pies (no changes or substitutions, please) might include spinach, mushroom or meats such as Calabrese sausage or pepperoni. Ingredients are local, sustainable and organic. Call ahead for takeout; no delivery.
