Fatapple's Restaurant and Bakery Description:
Despite its prime location near Berkeley's famed Gourmet Ghetto, and despite the sometimes enormous lines and wait times to get inside, this little neighborhood spot with the cute name is nothing but a modest, down-to-earth diner and bakery. The no-frills dining room décor includes light wood tables for about 35 and a large mural tribute to Jack London; next door, a functional bakery counter greets a daily stream of hungry young people from the middle school down the street. Pies are made daily and seasonally, including olallieberry, a house special. Breakfasts are also available, and simple basics such as pancakes (try the pumpkin version) and french toast prevail. (A tip: Next door's baked goods can be substituted for toast.) The fat burger is one of the area's better dining deals, though overall prices can be a little steep for the product. Mainly people come here for the pretense-free welcome, ease, American staples and family-friendly atmosphere.
