Helmand Description:
Helmand is comfortable enough for every day, but not inappropriate for a special occasion. It is exotic in that this food is Afghani, yet not so challenging that your finickiest friends won't enjoy every bite. How does Helmand do it? And how can it charge so little for such generous, well-prepared meals? We can hardly get enough of the kaddo borawni, a spiced pumpkin mash with lightly garlicky yogurt sauce. The aushak---delicate ravioli filled with leeks, topped with minty ground beef and yogurt---is first-rate. And the koufta challow with its lamb and beef meatballs, sun-dried raisins and spices is worth the trip. Expect to be treated like a visiting dignitary and to be enticed by the extensive vegetarian menu. Members of the Karzai family---Afghanistan's first family---are the owners, and there could be no better ambassadors for their country's cuisine.
