What do you get when you combine the hominess of a take-all-comers diner with the sociability of a neighborly chat over the backyard fence? Why Café Hon. Friendly is the word for this lynchpin of Hamden's 36th street, locally known as The Avenue. We're talking meatloaf sandwiches, bowls of thick potato soup, grilled cheese with bacon and tomato, chicken salad on toast, and hot turkey platters with mashed potatoes and yellow gravy, all served up in a spunky second-hand shop setting complete with teacup-and-saucer chandeliers. A case up front shows off the day's selection of cakes and pies, but don't let that deter you from trying the rib-sticking bread pudding. The addition of an attached bar has only added to this place's charm. Don't worry about getting lost---just look for the gigantic pink flamingo out front.
