Atkins Park Restaurant Description:
Established in 1922, Atkins Park occupies a site that has been in continuous operation as a tavern ever since. Period details abound, and the warm dark woods that unite the two downstairs spaces give an old-time pub feel to the place. But don't expect your typical pub grub. The beet salad with its mound of arugula, feta cheese crumbles and balsamic drizzle would be quite at home in fancier digs. Good fried green tomatoes come with a house-made pimento cheese spread (but a ranch dressing for dipping would be more harmonious). Pan-roasted trout is beautifully sweet and flavorful, and the whipped mashed potatoes on which it rests are almost worthy of their own plate. Roasted Springer Mountain Farms chicken, a Georgia specialty chicken, is among the dishes specific to this location. For dessert, we recommend the Grand Marnier-apple french toast, a portion big enough for two. Target the crab cake Benedict at brunch. The wine list is decent if not spectacular, and certainly has better choices than many pubs offer, but the good brew list has worthy alternatives.
