Duran Central Café Description:
In a town famed for its chile, the oft-thronged, cash-only lunch counter in the back of Duran's Central Pharmacy serves up some of the best---red or green. Thin and pure of flavor, it's the ideal match for thick, hot-off-the-griddle homemade tortillas literally dripping with butter, which, in turn, make great packaging for the chile cheeseburgers. Although New Mexico soul food doesn't get much better than that, old-timers will often opt for the pork tamales or cheese enchiladas topped with a fried egg. Meanwhile, if frills aren't a priority here, don't let anyone tell you the place lacks atmosphere: Duran's looks every inch the full-service, independent drugstore it's been operating as for nearly 70 years. That it happens to carry one of the best selections of perfumes in town is just gravy---especially when your pores are oozing capsaicin.
