Just a stone's throw from chichi Park Avenue, this neighborhood favorite is a pleasant surprise among Winter Park's mostly ho-hum dining choices. Inspired by London's hipster gastropubs that promise fine food along with alcohol, owners James and Julie Petrakis have crafted this cozy spot that keeps the crowds happy. The couple trained at the Culinary Institute of America and their creativity shines with a menu that changes with whatever's freshest at the market. If the tables are full, grab a seat in the bar area, where you can order off a separate menu with casual fare such as lobster tacos, shrimp 'n' grits, and a juicy pub burger with caramelized onions, blue cheese and truffle fries. The dining area with two rooms offers more substantial choices such as grilled pompano with roasted fingerling potatoes, artichokes and red pepper relish; steak frites, porcini marinated flat-iron steak served with signature truffle fries and béarnaise aïoli; and a grilled duck breast with polenta cake and fennel-peach salad. For starters, nibble rich Gruyère biscuits with a salad of baby beets, avocado and goat cheese, then share frito misto with squid, oysters and shrimp. Desserts are hit-and-miss, but one option is the "pig tails" fritters with chocolate espresso sauce for dipping. Service can be a bit slow. The menu also features microbrews and nice wine matches for the cuisine, though selections by the glass are limited.
