If you're in the market for fresh ice cream, you'll be hard pressed to beat A.C. Petersen Farms in West Hartford, since all their scoops---sorbet and frozen yogurt as well as ice cream---are made right next door at Nutmeg Farms Creamery. Upwards of 30 varieties are routinely available on a rotating basis; a number of tempting stir-ins only adds to the variety, as do sundaes and milkshakes. Unfortunately, all that rich, creamy stuff is by far the star of the show; the rest of the menu pretty much comes down to typically greasy diner fare, hardly worth mentioning. Service leaves a lot to be desired as well, especially at peak hours, when the place bustles. At least the décor, evoking a 1950s hash house, gives the place some unassuming charm, while the affordable prices certainly increase the allure for families.
