58 Delicatessen Description:
Call it Carnegie South or Rascal House North, but The Route 58 deli is the real deal. Sandwiches are crammed so full of lean pastrami and kosher salami, your jaw may need rewiring after a meal here. Owner Jeff Goldberg, a former radio DJ, has re-created the cold cut-chopped liver emporiums of his Livingston, New Jersey youth, making transplanted Yankees less homesick when they nosh on knishes and turning Southerners on to the healing power of matzo ball soup. Photos and mementos on the walls honor his formative years, favorite delis and loyal customers. Egg dishes are served all day, and platters of smoked fish from New York, be it nova, chubb, whitefish, kippered salmon, sable or herring, are particularly seductive. While prices may seem as steep as that corned beef piled high on rye (buyer beware if you ask for mayo), the quality is first-rate and portions are so eye-poppingly huge that many people share. After all, Route 58's slogan is, "If you finish it, we made a mistake."
