The signs on I-64 east of Richmond for Welcome South might have you thinking you're headed towards a hospitality center. But this modest, down-home charmer with an inviting front porch is a full service restaurant specializing in both country cooking and Italian-American favorites, like spaghetti with meatballs and eggplant Parmigiana. No doubt, though, you'll get a heaping helping of hospitality as the folks here are as friendly as can be. We're tempted by the pizza oven offerings and subs on fresh-baked bread, yet remain loyal to the grilled calf's liver topped with smoked slab bacon and grilled onions. Homemade brown gravy puddled in a mound of mashed potatoes and delicate green beans round out the generous plate. Music as country as the fried steak fills the air, and a lady who lives nearby makes desserts, including lemon pound cake capped with caramelized blueberries and a lip-smacker of a sweet potato pie.
