Myanmar Restaurant Description:
Restaurants that serve Burmese food are rare in the United States. And there are only a few, including this one, in the Washington, DC, area. How local residents will respond to catfish curry and mohingar (the fish soup that is eaten daily in Burma) remains to be seen. However, even if you skip that, we recommend the spicy pork with mango pickles, the squash fritters and the spicy chicken curry, all staples of Burmese home cooking. The kitchen even produces the sweet and intensely rich shweji for dessert and if you ask, the cook will make falooda, a sumptuous Indo-Burmese drink that is more dessert than anything else. To keep and please some American clientele, the owner has added such dishes as broiled salmon and kebabs to the menu, but these can’t match the Burmese food. Besides the Burmese landscape paintings, there’s little décor and nothing at all glamorous about the ambience.
