French chef and owner Didier Poirier loves introducing French food to the beach-town residents of Ventura. And he likes grilling up American fare in his Craftsman-style bungalow, too. The result is a sort of brasserie with a very friendly vibe. The old house might as well be his family home to which he invites people daily. You might meet his young son ferrying plates from the kitchen at lunchtime. At night his wife may greet you at the door. At the bar area, watch him shake up your martini himself. Or discover Belgian brewskies while noshing on a pizzette topped with smoked salmon, crème fraîche and capers. Dinner entrées run from grilled steaks to a double-cut pork chop to chicken ravioli in a sage cream sauce. Desserts are wonderfully French, with selections you don't often see like crêpes Suzette, profiteroles, and a floating meringue island. Chef Poirier teaches afternoon cooking classes each month that culminate in a three-course meal paired with wines. He also hosts occasional winemaker dinners featuring wines from the Central Coast, Napa Valley and Sonoma County.
