Hapa Izakaya Description:
Upscale izakayas are the new wave of Japanese dining. One of Vancouver's best opened when Justin Ault, a Japanese-Canadian, and his wife Lea launched Hapa on Robson Street and reinterpreted traditional izakaya pub food. In a high-tech room with low-slung tables, he pioneered "tapanaese"---inspired tapas-style small plates at reasonable prices. The young, energetic clientele comes for lively negitoro served with soft, thick slices of garlic bread, mackerel blow-torched tableside, and the "om-rice" bowl---a comforting mix of egg, chicken and spicy tomato sauce. Rice bowl fans like to press the rice mixture against the sizzling stone bowl to maximize its toasty tidbits. Finish with creamy, almond-scented tofu topped with pure Canadian maple syrup. Warm service and expanding bar offerings, plus the city's most comprehensive saké list, make this a top izakaya experience in town. Also located in Kitsilano and Yaletown.

It's the 3rd time I've been to this restaurant. The ambiance is good like usual. The drinks are good. However, the quality of service and food seem to be inconsistent from time to time. It's definitely a recommended place but sometimes it's perfect but sometimes you wonder why is it popular. Anyways, you'll definitely not get disappointed or pissed by going there.

There aren't enough words to describe how perfect this restaurant is...
Everything about it, from its non-pretentious decor, to its value oriented meal (about $130 for four of us with Sake), to the friendly (and pretty) staff, to the food... oh yeah... the food... unbelievable.
Some memorable highlights:
Food you must order
1- grilled squid
2- Mushroom rice bowl
3- Unagi rolled with egg crepe
4- Tamago with Chili and shrimp
5- Seafood Tartar Sushi (really good)
Drinks that are awesome:
1- Caesar with wasabi
2- Cold Sake (served in Bamboo pole-kewl)
Only thing that I can say that I didn't like was that the restaurant was sooooo busy that they could only take us at 6pm the latest and only if we promised to be out by 8pm... I guess you should book early.
If I could go higher than 5 star, I would...

This restaurant experience is beyond description. My husband and I loved Japanese before, but this experience brings it to a whole new level of appreciation. This is now our number #1 Vancouver restaurant and one not to be missed by anybody.

Izakaya means "a place to drink" in Japanese. This restaurants lives up to its name. They even serve sake in bamboo shoots. The waitresses there are so hot! You have to see to believe it. This is a place for guys to hangout and have fun while enjoying grilled dishes. The restaurant windows are blacked out so once you step in, you forget whether its day or night. I would recommend going there around 10 and just enjoy the drinks and the company of friends.
