Woodlands Grill at Barnsley Gardens Description:
In 1988 German prince Hubertus Fugger began restoring Barnsley Gardens to its pre-Civil War grandeur while leaving intact the ruins of Englishman Godfrey Barnsley's Italianate villa as an icon for the resort. Now owned by local entrepreneurs, Barnsley Gardens has reinvented its dining experiences. Executive chef Charles Vosbergh, with Clint Shade in the Grill, have re-positioned the Grill's menu to tilt toward fish and seafood, while offering fewer meat and steak dishes. The fried lobster tail with Chinese honey mustard and drawn butter makes a tasty opener, especially enjoyed with the Urban Riesling. Or choose the surprisingly satisfying tempura green beans with Asian dipping sauce, and with it enjoy a Warwick Sauvignon Blanc. The center-cut pork chop comes off a bit dry and requires a steak knife, but has lots of flavor. Properly cooked scallops make a more satisfying selection. The wine list features many good choices from all over the world. The list is a snapshot of what's being produced in South Africa, Australia and South America, as well as the more traditional wine-growing regions. Wines are served at good temperatures and in respectable glassware. The grill also serves breakfast, and this, too, has notched up in quality. We like the salmon hash with poached eggs and béarnaise sauce, but lighter choices are available as well.
