Doug's Place Description:
Once a general store, this 100-year-old building is lined with framed memorabilia---old automotive and Coke advertisements downstairs and archival photos upstairs. With its authentic "back-in-time feeling," this place could easily be a movie set. Real potatoes, fresh turnip and corn, always the delicious Silver Queen variety, are fresh daily. In fact, the vegetables are the strong suit, with fried green tomatoes classically first-rate and sweet melting squash casserole. The chicken and dressing with chopped egg is traditional, but be sure to ask for extra gravy to moisten it. Crispy fried catfish is a jewel. Homemade cobbler for a dessert choice is a must; go for the muscadine version when in season (fall), as this is an especially unusual regional specialty.
