Whitechapel Gallery Dining Room Description:
In the nineteenth century, the Whitechapel Gallery was a high-toned, worthy and very necessary East End gallery bringing art to the largely Jewish, immigrant population. Now it's been refurbished and reopened with a restaurant and bar. The space is small and crowded, with light colours and blond wood. The chef, Maria Elia, comes from the Delfina Studio Café in Bermondsey and has produced a short menu with rich tastes. Try confit chicken and purple potato terrine with watercress aïoli followed by slow roast spiced pork belly, fennel, tomato salad and watercress. Vegetarians are well treated here. Try the rather pompously named Textures of Heritage tomatoes which mixes tastes like tomato, almond and feta baklava with spiced tomato and fig soup. It's inventive and satisfying. Prices are high but so is quality. The café-bar is good for more modest dishes; the atmosphere at this important art gallery uplifting. Set lunch 2 courses £15, 3 courses £20.
