Le Bouchon Breton Description:
The refurbished Spitalfields Market has been transformed with "squares" and "streets" which, be warned, are not on any map, and not very well signposted either. But persevere, for this terribly Gallic spot, the offspring of Le Bouchon Bordelais in Battersea, offers some pretty gutsy French classics which appear on a menu set out in true brasserie style: les crustaces (crab, lobster, prawns); la mer sur on plateau; les entrées (snails and, sacré bleu, even frog's legs!); les poissons (you must try the mussels); and les viandes (topnotch veal kidneys or roast rack of lamb with rosemary jus). Then there's the grill which produces juicy steaks just begging to be eaten with frites and a béarnaise sauce. Forget the desserts; go instead for the impressive extravaganza of good French cheeses. The staff are charming and meticulous in their attention but without being obtrusive. The wine list is long and on the whole very expensive, majoring in Burgundies and Bordeaux with plenty of Champagne for when the bankers get their bonuses.
