Black Sheep Bistro Description:
Old Town Tustin's charming appeal makes it a good home for Black Sheep Bistro. This down-home restaurant is a labor of love for chef and proprietor Rick Boufford and his wife Diana, who runs the dining room. After traveling Europe's Mediterranean basin, the Bouffords came back to Orange County to specialize in "peasant food" from France, Italy and Spain. Start with the bistro's signature sweet dried dates stuffed with cheese and wrapped in a Spanish-style jamón---a satisfying dish with a glass of red vin de table. This restaurant's name, of course, belies Boufford's penchant for lamb. There are usually five or six types of lamb dishes like a spicy lamb harissa, Spanish-style lamb chops, or a whole baby New Zealand rack of lamb. Or opt for crispy duck confit, the Gascon grill (half a New York steak, half a lamb loin and a duck breast). In the spring and summer months, don't miss chef Boufford's savory paella. The wine list here is eclectic and full of boutique producers from Provence, Languedoc and Tuscany. The small shop inside the restaurant features European gourmet goods such as sausages, mustards, olive oils and wines.
