Northlake Thai Cuisine Description:
This fine restaurant hidden in a nameless strip shopping center stands out for extraordinarily artful presentations using elegant plates and bowls with unusual shapes and hand-painted designs. Luckily, the quality of the food shows equal care. Try a medley of appetizers: The chicken and shrimp ravioli in a lovely curry aïoli, the duck and scallion buns with a lovely plum sauce, or the crystal shrimp dumplings with soy dipping sauce make excellent tapas. Grilled bamboo-skewered chicken satay lightly touched with a kaffir lime-and-sesame marinade is another winner. Classic Thai soups---coconut-chicken and a seafood bisque that's really a light broth with gorgeous, tender, fresh seafood---taste supremely fresh and flavorful. The main courses are terrific. A perfectly grilled, generous slice of center-cut salmon filet with equally well-prepared pencil-thin asparagus rests in a light coconut curry, all presented in a Provençal fish bowl. The oversized sea scallops, deep-fried in a light rice batter, are exotic. Dessert selections consist of ice cream and pastries that are made off-site. The chocolate terrine is light but rich, and the green tea ice cream tastes rich and exotic. The wine list is much improved, and finally gives patrons a good Riesling (Bonny Doon's Pacific Rim) by the glass, but it remains a work in progress. It needs more selections that complement the food, thus fewer Chardonnays and more Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Viognier, Syrah and at least one rosé.
