Depot Description:
Chef Michael Shafer is one of the better-known restaurateurs of the South Bay, an outspoken man with an irreverent sense of humor. He designed and helped build this restaurant in a converted trolley depot, and while the atmosphere is one of subtle elegance, the creativity on the menu is unrestrained. Find dishes like rock shrimp sausages, crispy quail with Hudson River foie gras, and mustard-crusted lamb chops; the ever-changing menu often features Thai dishes and Southwestern ingredients. Executives from nearby Japanese companies drop in at lunch for unusually creative bento boxes, and others also have begun to catch on to the good variety at bargain prices. The wine and beer list is nicely selected and the lively bar is the place to be seen in downtown Torrance.
