Gonpachi is situated in the Miyako Hybrid Hotel, a solar-powered, eco-friendly hotel set amid the Honda and Toyota companies in Torrance. Its parent company, Global-Dining, Inc., operates dozens of restaurants in Japan, as well as Café La Bohème in West Hollywood, Santa Monica's Monsoon Café, and Gonpachi's sister establishment in Beverly Hills. The elegant dining room offers seemingly endless seating areas, including a long white communal table, square-shaped sushi bar and a lounge with fireplaces. (The large space makes it a popular place for birthdays and other celebrations.) Chef Yasu Kusano, who hails from Japan, oversees the kitchen. Morning brings a buffet that balances bagels and omelets with traditional Japanese breakfast items, while lunchtime offers rice bowls, sushi and sandwiches. The dinner menu features a wider selection of rolls and sushi and sashimi combinations, as well as main dishes like Maple Leaf duck breast with mushroom and buckwheat risotto and orange segments. Soba noodles are handmade by chefs on the spot. Desserts might include pumpkin zenzai: sweet red beans, mochi balls and vanilla ice cream in pumpkin soup topped with almonds. Saké pairings can be provided for your meal, or choose one of the specialty cocktails like the Gonpachi Sour made with Grey Goose L'Orange, plum wine and lemon juice. Multi-course kaiseki and omakase dinners are also available; the seven-course Gonpachi Gozen menu is an amazing value at $55.
