Avant Gout Restaurant Description:
This cozy 28 seat---plus six at the bar---bistro has been jam packed since its move to a location central to wealthy Rosedale residents. Bejeweled matrons come in cashmere, men in casual finery for a plate of comfort food and a good gab. The price is right for it to be a regular haunt for the 'hood's thrifty old money crowd. Chef-owner Kamal Hanni adds native Moroccan flavors to several of the dishes. A tangy shallot-saffron sauce with a dollop of lemon preserves tarts up the filet in salmon tagine. Slow-braised Moroccan lamb shank and grilled marinated chicken breast exude North African spicing. The bargain priced steak is a substantial cut of AAA Angus served with frites. House-made desserts are few and predictable such as vanilla crème brûlée and chocolate cake with ice cream. The wine list has 30-plus well-priced rather unconventional selections.
