Fool Moon Cafe & Coffee House Description:
Fool Moon is an aberration. An old storefront in the Cowboy Capital of the World is not where you'd expect to find a chef turning out some very serious food with a Mediterranean-Texas Hill Country theme. The 45-minute drive from San Antonio will reward the determined; but plan ahead, because dinner is served only on Friday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and the small space seats about 45. The menu, with its emphasis on local produce, varies frequently and is limited in scope. Go for such evening offerings as beautifully grilled steaks and lamb chops with tapenade and aïoli accompaniments, simple but elegant salads and comforting cobblers for dessert. Other typical fare has included pork tenderloin with blackberry-sage sauce and mesquite-grilled cabrito (kid goat) with roasted corn and scallion pancakes. Call ahead to find out what's planned and bring your own wine to match. Lunch is more predictable with the likes of lentil salad with bacon, baked goat cheese on mixed greens, pulled pork tenderloin on grilled ciabatta and a spicy salmon filet on a toasted roll. Service may be slow, so perhaps you should bring two bottles of wine.
