Here's a restaurant where you know right away what you're going to get, just from the name. Sonny's barbecue is tasty and reliable and offers some varieties not always found roasting on commercial wood fires---such as smoked turkey and smoked catfish. Founded by Sonny and Lucille Tillman in 1968 as a neighborhood gathering spot, they have expanded their reach to all corners of Tampa and St. Petersburg. The meat is slow-smoked over hardwood fires, and you can tell visually---as well as by taste---as the process gives the meat a reddish tone. Side dishes include coleslaw, baked beans, fried okra and Sonny's Special Recipe onion rings. In true Southern style, there are ample pitchers of freshly brewed iced tea, sodas or beer served in jumbo glasses.
