In an atmosphere of tasteful decadence in the lobby of the Market Pavilion Hotel, chef Demetre Castanas dishes up what could arguably be called Charleston's best steak. Appetizers of pre-shelled whole Maine lobsters and Kobe beef tartare immediately set the upscale tone. Castanas' entrées easily keep up with the standard he sets in the first course, with veal chops, steak topped with foie gras, and delicately seared tuna au poivre. For diners with something to prove or someone to share with, the 30-ounce prime rib is a good option, and with seafood choices like salmon with truffled red pepper béarnaise, no one will bemoan a lack of options. It's also an appropriate spot for a lunchtime celebration. The lunch menu is every bit as inviting as the dinner menu, with pasta dishes and benne seed scallops. The biggest challenge at lunch is clearly returning to work, especially when the rooftop bar of the Market Pavilion beckons on a pretty day, offering a fantastic view and a decadent, expensive array of fruity martinis.
