Santi's Restaurante Mexicano Description:
Santi's is not within walking distance of downtown Charleston, but finding it is worth the short drive north on East Bay (which turns into Morrison above Calhoun Street). It looks like a Tex-Mex place, but leans far more to the real deal. The masa-textured tortillas are a blend of corn meal and flour, and come freshly fried for the chips and salsa. The verde sauces are laced with citrusy tomatillo flavors and just the right amount of peppery heat. No fajitas here, but instead try the smoky grilled skirt steak entrées, served five different ways. The pollo en mole poblano is served in a rich, sweet-spiced, chocolate-accented sauce. Caldo de camarón is a delightful, piquant mix of whole shrimp in a light, limey broth with bits of jalapeño peppers on the side to allow you to adjust the heat. Most of the dinners include sides of slightly soupy refried beans and Mexican-style rice.
