Jackie's Description:
A restaurant in a converted auto-body shop. Decor includes very sixties-mod style. Open kitchen, American food.
Silver Spring takes on a retro nightclub look with this stark-walled eatery that is---in a 1940s way---the cat's pajamas. Cool and sleek, yet with enough of the suburban air to keep locals coming, this place features a menu inspired by the imagination of DC's leading chef, Ann Cashion, and a kitchen that is almost worthy of her food. A few slip-ups: a Maryland crab soup with few bits of crab and an uninspired nacho platter of corn chips topped with beans and cheese, a forgettable offering except for the whipped guacamole. If you stop in on Sunday, you won't find any nostalgia platters, and these hold the key to Jackie's success. Braised beef brisket, fried chicken, braised pork shoulder and meatloaf with mashed potatoes, all budget priced, add up to the real interest here. Otherwise, it's pricier fare, including a roasted duck breast, a grilled flatiron steak and a chicken breast that we found overcooked and under-seasoned. Desserts triumph, however. Don't skip Jackie's Sunshine cake with blueberry ice cream, served hot with a gently melting scoop of ice cream.
