Tavolata Description:
True to its name, a massive 30-foot "tavolata," or communal table, divides this restaurant's starkly elegant space designed with industrial flair. Rustic Italian fare put it on the map and made it one of downtown Belltown's hippest restaurants. But if you aren't a fan of the communal table concept, you'll want to wait for a romantic two-person booth or one of the small tables tucked around the room's edges. The limited menu changes daily, offering a handful of first courses, a dozen pastas and three entrées. Among the handmade pastas, we recommend the signature gnocchi with mozzarella, tomato and Reggiano. Pennette---slender tubular noodles---are tossed in herb-scented oil with a generous portion of moist shredded duck meat and pancetta. Of the entrées, the flavorful, two-pound rib-eye ($55) is best for sharing; we also suggest the branzino (sea bass) stuffed with lemon slices and thyme. Tavolata features a reasonably priced, all-Italian wine list. For a sweet ending, order the lemon-scented donut holes, crispy and dusted with sugar.
