Julia's Indonesian Kitchen Description:
Located in a charming, converted Craftsman-style house, this restaurant and café is as renowned for its warm Indonesian hospitality as its exotic cuisine. Olive green walls decorated with hand-carved wooden puppets enclose cozy rooms filled with batik-covered tables. If the menu overwhelms, the friendly staff will steer you in the right direction. Our recommendation is to begin with the risoles, a breaded pocket filled with chicken and vegetables in a béchamel-like sauce. Julia's offers a traditional rijstafel (Dutch for "rice table"), the Dutch colonial adaptation of an Indonesian dinner of assorted meat and vegetable dishes served family-style. Our favorite rijstafel dishes include empal, a sweet fried beef so tender it flakes with barely a nudge of the fork; telor belado, or hardboiled eggs blanketed in a sweet and spicy tomato sauce; and orak arik, a combination of tofu and tempeh sautéed in a sweet soy sauce. The wedang jahe, a steaming tisane spiced with the hot breath of ginger, is a panacea for all ills. Dessert drinks such as es teler, which mixes bits of avocado, shredded coconut and jackfruit into a milky beverage, is a refreshing finale to a rich, spicy meal.
