Bastille Restaurant Description:
Dark woods, white ceramic tile walls, old clocks, and massive steel arches salvaged from a bridge create an authentic French bistro setting in a former machine shop. Although Bastille's grand size makes it seem like a French café on steroids, the ambience is enchanting and the cuisine well-prepared. Unfortunately, the main dining area is so noisy you might think you're in the Paris Metro at rush hour. But ignore all this, and concentrate on the food. The simple menu offers a wide selection of classic French sandwiches, small plates and entrées. For starters, choose an ultra fresh salad with greens plucked from the restaurant's rooftop garden and tossed with hazelnut vinaigrette. Among the small plates, the duck leg confit and onion soup are standouts, but lemon overwhelms the olive oil-marinated chickpeas. Entrées of note include moist pan-roasted chicken and grilled flat-iron steak served with a béarnaise sauce. Pass on the disappointing interpretation of coquilles St-Jacques with its seared scallops atop a bland cauliflower purée. For a sweet finale, order the lavender-infused crème brûlée. A pricey wine list focuses on the Northwest and France, but a carafe of house white or red is a modest $15.
