As the city's oldest steakhouse, the elegant "Met" is known for its terrific steaks, martinis, and old school ambience. A financial district watering hole, the restaurant draws movers and shakers to its big, boisterous bar where they track the Dow's ups and downs. Prime, dry-aged, corn-fed beef grilled over Mexican mesquite charcoal rules the menu, and steaks and chops are nicely done and available in petite cuts. Prime rib rates high, too. One may also opt for the chicken Marsala or Dungeness crab fettuccine, but most locals know better. Appetizers are largely superfluous, although we do like the smoked sirloin carpaccio, even if steak preceded by steak might seem over the top. Salads, sandwiches, a couple of burgers, and chef's specials vary on the lunch menu. If you must order something other than meat, the grilled catch-of-the-day is usually reliable. The wine list is long on reds with a focus on West Coast varietals, and hard on the wallet. For a sweet finale, consider a chocolate martini, a surprising original. Service is polished and professional.
