Szmania's Restaurant Description:
A modest facade hardly prepares you for the stylish contemporary décor inside this gem of a restaurant, tucked away in Magnolia Village. The liveliest seats in the house are the dozen rimming the exhibition kitchen, but we like to sit just beyond the sheer muslin curtain grandly draping the entryway. Handsome owner and chef Ludger Szmania sets admirably high standards for himself and his staff; gaffes are few and service is among the most polished in town. There's a continental gloss to the contemporary Northwest cuisine. Seafood is prominent on the menu and handled with finesse---from house-smoked scallops and trout splashed with Riesling vinaigrette to translucent king salmon artfully arranged with Yukon gold and purple potato salad. Salmon in a crisp potato jacket is a signature entree, made only when the best king or sockeye is available. We also favor horseradish-dusted mahi mahi in a lush lobster and mushroom sauce and salade Nicoise, updated with seared, rosy rare albacore tuna. For the meat-and-potatoes gang, there is a perfect New York strip, whose peppercorn demi-glaze seeps lusciously into the accompanying goat-cheese filled potato pancake. Several entrees are offered in smaller portions at reduced prices, a tradition we absolutely love because it leaves room for dessert: If we had to choose just one from the long list, we would sink into the sweet and complex saffron banana semifreddo gateau sauced with caramelized bananas and rum.
