Shanghai Garden Description:
One of the International District's gems, this spot is a destination for anyone desiring authentic Chinese cuisine. Chef Hua Te Su, who apprenticed in Taipei, adheres to classic techniques, but doesn't restrict himself to tradition and offers a constantly evolving menu. His chow mein is a distinctive pairing of hand-shaved rice, corn or barley green noodles. His doughy dumplings, filled with a combination of minced pork, shrimp and crab, contain a spoonful of flavorful hot broth. Must-have dishes include bamboo fungus with green cabbage, and pea vines with black mushrooms. Don't miss the deep-fried scallops or shrimp coated in white pepper and sweet potato powder. At lunch, the orange crispy beef is irresistible, particularly with an order of brown rice. Don't leave without tasting Su's ice cream du jour, which might be made from honeydew melon, sour plums or dried loganberries, a lychee-like fruit. Love plain vanilla? You can have it too---fried in a wonton wrapper. Also located at 80 Front St. N., Issaquah, 425-313-3188.
