Ivar's Salmon House offers panoramic views of Lake Union and downtown Seattle from a replica of a Coastal Indian longhouse. The striking, 400-seat interior features beautiful wooden, hand-carved totem-poles and Native American-inspired art, making it an ideal place to take out-of-town visitors, especially any with children. Unfortunately, the dramatic décor somewhat eclipses the food, which is acceptable but predictable. Begin with a few appetizers, such as the warm crab dip or herb-dusted fried calamari, or order a hearty bowl of one of Ivar's signature chowders---white, salmon or seafood. Salad lovers will enjoy the warm spinach tossed with bacon, crasins, walnuts and goat cheese. The Asian-style seafood salad, with crab, smoked scallops, shrimp and seared ahi, makes a fine light supper. Of the entrées, order something cooked on the alderwood plank grill, such as salmon, chicken or black cod. Look to the daily fresh-sheet for seasonal seafood specials. If you're a connoisseur of fish 'n' chips, you won't be disappointed by the beer-battered, wild Alaskan halibut version served here. There's even a kids' menu parents will find quite magical. For picnic-style lakeside dining, order from the outdoor Fish Bar. It's fast, affordable and fun.
