One of Seattle's most sophisticated restaurants, the Hunt Club is housed in the palatial Sorrento Hotel, built in 1908. Today, the hotel's old-world luxury has the feel of a posh men's club, offering a slightly staid ambience sparked with a flash of romance. The restaurant itself dates to 1981, and for a time in that decade and in the early 1990s its chefs broke new culinary ground. Today's kitchen is more capable than cutting edge, but chef Matthew Mina does an impressive job with his menu of classic Northwest dishes. The menu changes seasonally and might include seafood linguine with mussels, clams, prawns and salmon, or braised lamb shanks with sweet shallots and sour cherries. Start with a garden fresh salad of baby greens and mixed berries tossed with a white balsamic vinaigrette, or indulge in succulent steamed Penn Cove mussels. Desserts range from comforting apple cobbler to warm croissant bread pudding with caramel sauce. The circular Fireside Room off the hotel's lobby---with acres of Honduran mahogany and gilt frames on Old Master reproductions---is a grand spot for afternoon tea or a well-constructed cocktail. The weekend brunch is perfect for special occasions and impressing out-of-town guests.
