Elemental @ Gasworks Description:
The placard facing this restaurant's entryway sums up its credo: "There are over 1,200 normal restaurants in Seattle. This is not one of them." Owners Phred Westfall and Laurie Riedeman have styled a restaurant that, due to its size and small menu, turns the dining experience into an intimate chef's dinner. Reservations aren't part of the scheme, so it's best to arrive between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. (when cocktails are served) or around 9 p.m. to partake of either the à la carte or prix-fixe three-course menu. Enjoy the small, thoughtful touches, such as the garlic-spiced popcorn with cocktails. Your servers (aka the chef-owners and a single sous chef) pair wine with each course. Dishes may include a zucchini terrine as a garlicky, yet delicate starter. Shrimp with a tangy sauce reminiscent of rémoulade satisfies, while mushroom dumplings in a savory broth and a cold fish salad are impressive; a tasty veal preparation with Fontina and prosciutto arrived slightly dry. As a sweet finale, a homemade Oreo-style creation stands up to its dessert wine.
