Dragonfish Asian Café Description:
The bright, colorful décor leans toward Asian honky-tonk, but it's done with wit and whimsy: pachinko machines, Japanese comic book heroes, and a 250-gallon aquarium filled with koi are all part of the fun. An exhibition wok station and a separate robata grill add to the liveliness. The menu is geared toward shareable plates and prices are surprisingly gentle. From the robata grill come small plates and skewered meats, fish and vegetables for dipping in a tart ponzu sauce. We've learned to love iceberg lettuce when it cups a melange of minced chicken, shiitake mushrooms, pine nuts, ginger and garlic in pungent oyster sauce. Shrimp turn up in two of our favorite dishes: with scallops, baby bok choy and shiitakes in an elegant stir-fry presented on a cloud of crispy noodles; and paired with garlicky Chinese sausage in fried jasmine rice laced with scallions, peas and bean sprouts. The extensive menu includes sushi rolls and bento boxes, along with cocktails like the Dragon's Breath martini, sure to add fire to an already flamboyant-yet-economical Happy Hour. Dessert offers plenty of razzle dazzle too, from the tropical fruit sorbet to the five-spice chocolate fudge cake, an exotically flavored steaming bun of chocolate with a molten fudge center under a drizzle of passion fruit, raspberry and chocolate hazelnut sauce.
