Coastal Kitchen Description:
Every neighborhood should be lucky enough to have a local restaurant of this caliber. Part of the Chow family of eateries, this café attracts an eclectic Capitol Hill crowd to the funky split-level storefront with a ceramic tile floor and painted wood wainscoting identifying 1920s origins. Although the dinnertime focus here is fish---no farmed fin fish swim on the menu---the comfort food fare also includes oven-roasted chicken with mashed potatoes, pastas, and breakfast all day long. "Blunch" is the term here for the combined breakfast and lunch menu served daily from morning to mid-afternoon. Quarterly special menus focus on coastal regions around the world while the basic menu is a world tour of sorts, too, starring appetizers such as rasta roll-ups stuffed with rum-marinated chicken chunks and jerk seasonings. We prefer the less exotic fare: roast chicken and the spicy center-cut pork chops, or the fish of the day simply grilled. Big, homey desserts at the end are a satisfying splurge.
