Annapurna Café Description:
Although named for the world's tenth highest mountain and a pinnacle of the Himalayas, entering this cozy restaurant requires movement in the opposite direction---descending a flight of stairs. Once accomplished, you enter a vibrant space glowing with bright orange walls and decked with colorful photographs, Tibetan prayer flags, and wall hangings. The friendly owner and her staff are warm and welcoming, ready to serve standard Indian fare featuring first-rate vegetarian options, along with lesser known Tibetan and Nepali dishes hard to find elsewhere. For a starter, sample momos, the Nepalese version of pot stickers served with three dipping sauces. The squat, round bundles with a pinched swirl on top are stuffed with chicken or spinach. Choose a Himalayan curry with your choice of meats simmered in a sauce redolent with Szechuan peppers, tomatoes and Tibetan herbs. Or enjoy savory gyatak noodle soup, which combines egg noodles with lamb pieces, garlic and tomatoes in a broth topped with a fried egg. Feeling extra hungry? Order one of the set meals that include an assortment of curries, pakoras, and tandoori meats served with rice, naan and chutneys.
