Poppy Description:
Jerry Traunfeld, the former chef at the celebrated Herbfarm, continues to make culinary waves with his restaurant Poppy, where the style is chic, casual and inventive. Think minimalist Scandinavian or upscale IKEA with laminated tables, accents of bright orange, brick walls and high ceilings. Food presentation is original and based on a traditional Indian dining style featuring small dishes, here starring seasonal flavors and Northwest ingredients, served on a "thali," which translates in Hindi to "tray." Basically, it's an exotic chef's tasting menu served at one go. A single thali menu (with a vegetarian option) is served nightly and includes ten small, beautiful earthenware dishes, some hot, some cold. Different flavors, colors and textures create a visually striking platter of small bites. The thali have included pumpkin soup with a crispy black olive praline, a flavorful Asian pear salad with celery and hazelnuts, roasted fingerling potatoes accented with five seed varieties, and fragrant braised chicken with leek and porcini. An example of a vegetarian substitution is a savory fennel, goat cheese and lentil pie. Choosing which to eat first---hot or cold?---can be a bit confusing. Thali may be the focus at Poppy, but we're more likely to return for the starters. Our favorites include crispy eggplant fries tossed with sea salt and honey, and fried mussels with dill. Desserts have included a plum lavender tart with honeyed cream and a dark chocolate terrine with ginger, hazelnut and sesame.
