Petite Maison Description:
The menu reads like French foodie porn: porc et lardon (roasted pork loin with celery root and braised cabbage in red wine gastrique), poisson entiers pour deux (a whole grilled fish for two in sauce charon) and steak tartare (grass-fed beef with Banyuls vinegar, fried egg yolk and gaufrettes). But then, what would you expect from one of the sexiest chefs in the Valley (we mean in the kitchen, of course)? Chef-owner James Porter practically caresses each recipe with his use of lavish ingredients and driving passion for fresh and local products. The setting is appropriately intimate for such indulgences, with just 22 seats in the dining room, 11 at the bar and 30 on the patio. That's all the better for coveting your neighbor's dishes, like boudin blanc (house-made sausage with poached apple and frisée) or beignets du Nutella. Service, like the reasonably priced food, is professional yet relaxed, and everyone in the café is well trained in the best wine pairings, sourced primarily from France. For an extra treat, stop by on Thursdays, Fridays or Saturdays for a late night menu called "Staff Meal," a nightly changing favorite dish from Porter's support cooks.
