Ciopinot Seafood Grille & Oyster Bar brings a new level of comfortable sophistication to downtown San Luis Obispo, and the menu reflects owners Leonard and Wendy Cohen's passion and familiarity with the local seafood and wine industries. The raw bar features at least four to five types of oysters each evening, but the real treat---when they're available---is the plate of fresh local rock crab claws served with drawn butter. As the restaurant's moniker suggests, the Italian-American fish stew known as cioppino is the signature dish, so opt for a "no work" dish with all the cracking already done for you. Other fish selections depend heavily on seasonality, but offerings have included salmon with wasabi glaze and local swordfish stuffed with feta and spinach. The dessert menu offers an over-the-top ice cream pie, as well as a delicate crème brûlée and a satisfying pistachio sorbet. The Pinot-centric wine list celebrates all manner of Pinots, be they Noir, Blanc, Gris or Meunier, and all significant regions are represented. There's also a good wines-by-the-glass list, almost two dozen half-bottles, and no corkage fee, plus inventive cocktails.
