Uva Enoteca Description:
Opened by Mario Batali disciple Boris Nemchenok, Uva Enoteca brings the best of New York City's Italian enotecas---casual wine bars with snacks and small plates---to San Francisco. Located in the increasingly stylish yet still somewhat grungy Lower Haight, Uva's simple, chic décor (high ceilings, hanging Edison bulbs, exposed brick, dark hardwood floors), all-Italian wine list and boisterous, hip crowd make it the perfect place to swing in for a few nibbles or a full meal with friends. The impressive all-Italian cheese list pairs nicely with a glass of Lambrusco, a slightly fizzy red wine from Emilia-Romagna, as do the artisanal salumi. Chef Ben Hetzel has a magical touch with simple vegetable preparations: fresh beans with savory pancetta and pickled red onions or a fresh heirloom tomato salad with creamy burrata really shine. There are always a few thin-crust pizzas on the menu, but for a new spin on the pizza, try a piadine, made with flattened, grilled pizza dough. A version filled with cinnamon-and-cardamom-spiked eggplant caponata, arugula and montasio strikes a balance among savory, spicy and sweet. To top off a meal in true Italian fashion, go all-out with a decadent sundae of pistachio gelato topped with almonds, chunks of house-made biscotti, and a dollop of impossibly light juniper-balsamic whipped cream. With a sweet ending like that, it's easy to see why Uva is already a neighborhood gem.
