Spruce Description:
The highly anticipated eatery from the owners of the Village Pub in Woodside features chef Mark Sullivan's Mediterranean inflected American cuisine. Seasonal produce (from the restaurant's own farmer) shines in dishes like spring vegetables with ricotta dura and an avocado green goddess dressing; charred Berkshire pork tenderloin with crispy pancetta and shelling beans; and grilled ocean trout with spring onions, caramelized beets and horseradish soubise. Grilled bavette steak with bordelaise accompanied by duck fat french fries serves the heartier appetite. Buttered Maine lobster is a bit disappointing---a pool of sauce obliterates the delicate flavor of the crustacean and the potato gnocchi are weighty. House-made charcuterie include a country pâté, spicy coppa, and topnotch soppressata. The rest of the bar menu includes a fat, juicy burger; chanterelle omelet; and an addictive boudin blanc served with sauerkraut. Housed in a historical 1930s building (once a car garage), soaring steel and glass ceilings and dark brown mohair add elegance to the main dining room, while the fireplace in the library welcomes visitors to relax with wine chosen from the 1,000-bottle list. A café up front serves many items to go, from charcuterie and Caesar salad to entrées including the burger and Moroccan chicken. Service is professional yet friendly.
